2,000 Shops Demolished in Onitsha as Anambra State Government Takes Action on Building Collapse

Addressing the issue of incessant building collapses in Onitsha, Anambra State, the state government on Monday, March 11, 2024, demolished at least 2,000 shops along Niger Street in Fegge, Onitsha South Local Government Area.

The demolition was prompted by the collapse of a five-storey building under construction at Basden Street in Fegge.

The incident prompted Governor Charles Soludo to order the Chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Mr Emeka Orji, to take immediate action.

Mr Orji, who supervised the demolition, informed newsmen that the shop owners had been issued a notice regarding the demolition, which was followed by a series of follow-up notices.

However, the shop owners failed to comply with the orders.

Governor Soludo personally visited the area last week and informed the shop owners that the location was not meant for shops or markets.

He then ordered Mr Orji to proceed with the demolition, which was carried out after a final one-week notice.

In place of the demolished shops, the state government plans to establish a Sea Side Resort, complete with green park areas and umbrella trees for relaxation and amusement.

This move is aimed at not only addressing the issue of building collapse but also enhancing the city’s aesthetics and providing recreational spaces for residents and visitors.

Additionally, buildings currently under construction in the area will be subjected to integrity tests to ensure their safety and adherence to construction standards.

Some of the affected shop owners, such as Mrs Ekeoma Okafor, have claimed that they were not given any notice regarding the demolition.

They have also alleged that government officials were being vindictive because they refused to settle some of them.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the affected shop owners will be compensated and whether the establishment of the Sea Side Resort will be a successful endeavor in improving the city’s infrastructure and safety standards.
