Why Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Project Stalled: Minister Umahi Reveals Insights

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, aimed at connecting Lagos to Cross River, has encountered delays, and the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has shed light on why the project is yet to begin.
During a recent event in Lagos State, Umahi revealed insights into the project’s challenges, emphasizing the need for the demolition of certain structures and the provision of compensation to affected individuals.
Umahi inspected the area around the Landmark Beach, specifically the Mami Chula Beach Lifestyle, to ensure the most economical and viable way to access the coastal roads without causing significant damage.
He highlighted that the demolition was necessary since the landmark center was located on the Federal Government’s right-of-way.
The Minister assured that compensation would be provided to those affected by the demolition.
Speaking on the importance of the project, Umahi stressed that despite some opposition, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is essential for economic development.
He also commended individuals like Bolaji, who have been cooperative and understanding, acknowledging that their infrastructure is among those majorly affected by the project.
Documentation for compensation is set to begin between May 2 and May 3, with Umahi promising to be available throughout the week to address any confirmation or payment issues related to the demolition.
This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition for those impacted by the project.
As the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project moves forward, it is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the region, connecting Lagos to Cross River and passing through Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom states.
The project is estimated to cost N15 trillion and span 700 km, with a cost of N4 billion per kilometer.
