Amra Salihu, a 500-level law student at the University of Abuja, has won the 9th Inter-Universities Speech Contest held by the Intergovernmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA). The competition took place on July 22 in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Salihu represented Nigeria after triumphing in the national selection run by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU). She beat competitors from The Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Ghana to claim the regional crown.
The university's acting director of information and university relations, Habib Yakoob, confirmed the victory in a statement on Thursday in Abuja. He noted that Salihu received a winner's plaque, a certificate of honour, and $1,000 in prize money.
Another 500-level law student, Abah Goodness, attended the event as an observer. The Law Clinic's director, Dr Nasiru Mukhtar, coached the team alongside J R Gogol of the NFIU, who provided technical support.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi praised the achievement in a statement.
"Our students from the Faculty of Law have once again made the university proud," he said.
Fawehinmi added that he was commending the Faculty of Law and the Law Clinic for their training and mentorship work. "We will continue to work even harder to enhance the university's global visibility through academic excellence and outstanding achievements such as this," he told reporters.
