TUC Raises Concerns Over Port Harcourt Refinery Delay, Demands Inclusion in Oronsaye Report Implementation

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria has expressed concern over the delay in the commencement of production at the old Port Harcourt Refinery, despite assurances from contractors and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) employees that operations would begin in the first week of April.
The labour centre emphasized the broader implications of this delay on the nation’s economy and urged the government to ensure that production starts immediately.
During a briefing with journalists in Abuja following the labour centre’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, TUC president, Comrade Festus Osifo, highlighted several pressing issues affecting Nigerian workers and the economy.
In addition to the refinery delay, the TUC expressed concern over the lack of representation for organized labour in the Oronsaye Report Implementation Committee.
The labour centre demanded a seat at the table to closely monitor the committee’s activities and contribute its recommendations.
The TUC also called for a new minimum wage to be put in place promptly, arguing that this is the only way to re-inflate the economy.
The labour centre further urged the Federal Ministry of Labour and state governments to prioritize the review of labour laws.
Addressing other pressing issues, the TUC criticized the recent increase in electricity tariffs, persistent insecurity, and the current economic hardship faced by Nigerians.
The labour centre urged the federal government to address these challenges and ensure the regular disbursement of wage awards to federal workers.
As Nigeria grapples with a range of economic and security challenges, the TUC’s demands reflect the growing frustration among workers and the broader population.
The government’s response to these concerns will be crucial in determining the country’s future economic trajectory and the well-being of its citizens.
