Transport Sector Struggles Amid Economic Downturn: NARTO Calls for Government Intervention

The National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) in Taraba State has voiced concerns over the challenges faced by the transportation industry due to Nigeria’s economic downturn and rising living costs.

In a recent statement, the state chairman, Alhaji Hamman Adama Tukur, highlighted the issues faced by transport owners, particularly in the procurement of diesel, a crucial component of their operations.

Tukur emphasized that the current cost of diesel per liter stands at One Thousand, Seven Hundred and Fifty Naira (N1,750.00), which has severely impacted the profitability of transport businesses.

He urged the Federal Government to take action to reduce the price of diesel and ensure the sustainability of the transport sector.

In addition to economic challenges, the NARTO chairman also addressed concerns over insecurity.

The association has instructed drivers to avoid night-time journeys and instead park in nearby towns, resuming travel at daybreak.

The government has been called upon to deploy security personnel to highways to combat crime and ensure road safety.

In a positive development, the state chapter commended Governor Agba Kefas for the construction of a multi-million naira trailer park in the Pantinapu area.

This facility is expected to provide essential services to trailer and truck operators in the state.

Furthermore, the governor was praised for his efforts in tackling insecurity by distributing vehicles and motorcycles to security agencies, leading to his appointment as a patron of NARTO.

As Nigeria faces economic challenges, the transport sector’s concerns and the government’s response will be crucial in determining the future of the industry and the nation’s overall economic recovery.
