Trade Union Veterans Demand Resignation of LP Chairman Julius Abure

Trade Union veterans have accused Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), of betraying the party’s ideals and demanded his resignation.

The veterans, including the pioneer President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Hassan Sunmonu, and other prominent figures, issued a statement on Sunday expressing their disappointment in Abure’s actions and their impact on the party’s image.

The statement highlighted the noble intentions behind the formation of the Labour Party by the Trade Unions, which aimed to free Nigerian people from decades of bad governance.

The veterans emphasized the importance of upholding the party’s principles and ethical values, which they believe are being disregarded by Abure.

The Trade Union veterans called for the immediate resignation of Abure and suggested that the Board of Trustees should appoint a Caretaker National Chairman to organize congresses in the states before a National Convention can be convened.

They also proposed the enlargement of the Board of Trustees to accommodate representatives of new stakeholders, such as Mr. Peter Obi, Governor Alex Otti, and the Labour Party Legislative Caucus.

The veterans referred to a Supreme Court ruling under Justice Uwais, which stated that workers had the right to form a political party to defend and promote their interests.

They questioned how any informed lawyer could argue that the NLC has no business in politics or is a meddlesome interloper in the affairs of the Labour Party.

In conclusion, the Trade Union veterans have made their stance clear on the need for Julius Abure to step down as the National Chairman of the Labour Party, citing his actions as detrimental to the party’s image and the ideals it was founded upon.
