Tinubu Declares April 7 National Police Day, Recognizes Outstanding Officers

President Bola Tinubu has officially declared April 7 as National Police Day, a significant milestone in recognizing the vital role of the Nigerian Police Force in ensuring the security and stability of the nation.

The announcement was made during the maiden edition of the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony held in Abuja, where Vice President Kashim Shettima represented President Tinubu.

The declaration of National Police Day is part of a broader initiative by President Tinubu’s administration to transform the Nigeria Police Force into a modern, professional, and accountable institution.

The administration has already initiated wide-ranging reforms aimed at revitalizing the force, emphasizing the importance of training and capacity-building for officers.

Recognizing the critical role of the police in safeguarding the nation, President Tinubu stressed the need to equip officers with the necessary skills and expertise to carry out the demanding task of modern policing.

He highlighted the government’s commitment to investing in training and capacity-building programs to ensure officers are well-prepared to tackle the complex challenges they face.

Additionally, President Tinubu announced that the Federal Government has approved the first week of April as Police Week, culminating in National Police Day on April 7th.

This initiative serves to honor the contributions of the police force and to humanize the officers who serve the nation.

In his speech, President Tinubu acknowledged the immense pressure faced by the police in maintaining security amidst an increasingly challenging environment.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to upgrading equipment and technology to enhance the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the force.

This includes acquiring fit-for-purpose equipment, weapons, ammunition, and armored carriers, as well as improving the status of officers both during and after their service.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, commended the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for recognizing the hard work, resilience, and patriotism of the officers and men of the Police Force.

He expressed his delight and that of the National Assembly for celebrating the well-deserved officers of the force, emphasizing the importance of weeding out bad officers while recognizing the good.

As Nigeria marks National Police Day on April 7th, the country celebrates the dedication and commitment of its police officers in maintaining peace and order, while also looking forward to a new era of a modernized, professional, and accountable police force.
