Telecom Operators Prepare for Second Wave of Disconnections on March 29th

Telecom operators in Nigeria are gearing up for another wave of disconnections on March 29th, 2024, as part of the ongoing process to link National Identification Numbers (NINs) with Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) numbers.

This move is in compliance with the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) directive to curb the activities of bandits, kidnappers, and other criminals who threaten the country’s security.

The disconnection exercise is being implemented in phases. The first phase, which took effect on February 28, 2024, led to the barring of approximately 40 million lines, including 17 million active SIMs without NINs and 23 million inactive SIMs without NINs.

The second phase, scheduled for March 29th, will target subscribers with five or more SIMs from one operator who have unverified NIN-SIM linkages.

Operators are reportedly cooperating with the NCC and have assured the commission of their full compliance with the directive on the slated date.

However, there are ongoing appeals to extend the April deadline for the third phase, which will affect subscribers with four or fewer SIMs and unverified NIN-SIM linkages.

The ongoing disconnection exercise is part of the federal government’s efforts to strengthen security measures and combat criminal activities in the country.

The successful implementation of the NIN-SIM linkage process is crucial in achieving this goal and ensuring a safer environment for all Nigerian citizens.
