Sokoto Governor Aliyu Dethrones 15 District Heads for Alleged Misconduct

Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has dethroned 15 District Heads. The decision, announced in a statement by the press secretary to the Governor, Abubakar Bawa, on Tuesday, cited various reasons for the dethronements, including insubordination, land racketeering, aiding insecurity, and conversion of public properties.
Among the District Heads removed from their positions are those from Unguwar Lalle, Yabo, Wamakko, Tulluwa, lllela, Dogon Daji, Kebbe, Alkammu, and Giyawa districts.
Additionally, some District Heads appointed by the former Governor Aminu Tambuwal at the end of his administration were also dethroned due to the nature of their appointment and rejection by their subjects.
The cases of District Heads from Isa, Kuchi, Kilgori, and Gagi have been recommended for further investigation.
Furthermore, the Sarkin Yakin Binji, a senior counselor in the Sultanate Council, was transferred to Bunkari, and the District Head of Sabon Birni was redeployed to Gatawa.
In contrast, seven other District Heads were retained by the Sokoto State government.
These include notable figures such as Alhaji Aliyu Abubakar III Churoman Sokoto, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki Maccido Barayar Zaki, and Aminu Bello Sarkin Yamman Balle.
The dethronements are a result of recommendations from the Committee on the Review of Appointments of Traditional Rulers, Renaming of Tertiary institutions, and the Dissolution of Governing Councils of State Parastatals, which Governor Aliyu had established to address various issues within the state.
The move underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining order and ensuring that traditional rulers adhere to the established standards of conduct and governance.
It also serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency within the state’s administrative and traditional systems.
