Senator Matthew Uroghide and Others Defect to APC: A Major Political Shift in Edo State

Senator Matthew Uroghide, along with other prominent politicians, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This move comes as a boost to the APC’s ranks in the state and reflects a growing trend of political realignment ahead of the 2024 Edo governorship election.

The event marking the defection took place in Benin City on Saturday, with Senator Uroghide expressing his delight in returning to the APC after a 13-year-three-month stint with the PDP.

A two-time senator representing Edo South, Uroghide described his decision as a homecoming to a party of mature politicians, in whom he trusts and has confidence.

He also pledged to contribute to the growth of the APC and support its candidates in the upcoming gubernatorial race.

Uroghide was not the only notable figure to switch allegiances on that day.

Other defectors included Patrick Giwa, a former clerk of the House of Representatives and candidate for the Owan Federal Constituency in the 2023 election, as well as eight local government chairmen, among them Frank Ilaboya of Owan West Local Government Area.

The defection ceremony was attended by high-profile APC leaders, including Senator Adams Oshiomhole and members of the state executive, who welcomed the new members with open arms.

This influx of experienced politicians is expected to strengthen the APC’s position in Edo State and potentially influence the outcome of the 2024 gubernatorial election.

Senator Matthew Uroghide’s defection to the APC, along with other prominent politicians, represents a significant political shift in Edo State.

This move could have far-reaching implications for the state’s political landscape and the dynamics of the upcoming gubernatorial election.

As the APC consolidates its ranks, the party will be looking to capitalize on this momentum to secure victory in the 2024 contest.
