Nigeria's Securities and Exchange Commission has given the go-ahead to two more virtual asset service providers to join its Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme. GIGX Technologies and KuCoin Nigeria Limited secured Approval-in-Principle status, allowing them to run cryptocurrency and digital asset operations under SEC supervision while pursuing full registration.
The programme functions as a transitional pathway for crypto operators seeking to enter the regulated market. Firms admitted can continue serving customers while proving they meet the commission's standards on operations, governance, and risk management before securing permanent authorisation.
These approvals represent another milestone in Nigeria's push to build a properly supervised digital asset sector. The move should bolster investor confidence and drive compliance across the country's booming virtual asset space.
The timing matters. Nigeria passed the Investments and Securities Act in 2025, which formally classifies digital assets as securities in certain cases and extends SEC authority over the sector.
The legislation creates stronger legal backing for regulating crypto businesses and shielding investors from harm.
Regulatory clarity has long frustrated fintech firms and investors in Nigeria. The SEC's decision to expand ARIP participation signals it wants to nurture innovation while protecting consumers, not strangle digital asset growth.
Bringing more operators under oversight should lift transparency and squeeze out unlicensed platforms. Licensed providers may find institutional partnerships easier to secure, while customers gain stronger protections.
The approvals fit Nigeria's broader strategy to emerge as Africa's leading digital finance hub. As more virtual asset service providers embrace regulation, the ecosystem stands to become more sophisticated and trustworthy.
Joining ARIP doesn't grant a full operating licence, though. Companies in the programme still face continuous regulatory scrutiny and must tick every box before the commission grants them permanent status.
