Rivers State Executive Council Approves N6.7bn Road Project Amidst Political Crisis

The Rivers State Executive Council has made a significant move to improve the state’s infrastructure.

The Council has recently approved the allocation of N6.7 billion for the reconstruction of the 5-kilometre long Okania-Ogbogoro Road in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The decision was made during the Council’s 7th meeting, which was presided over by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, with the Deputy Governor, Prof Ngozi Odu, and other cabinet members in attendance.

This development comes at a crucial time for the state, as it faces a complex political crisis.

Despite these challenges, the Council remains focused on advancing the state’s development agenda and improving the lives of its citizens.

The reconstruction of the Okania-Ogbogoro Road is expected to alleviate the severe traffic congestion caused by the ongoing construction of the Port Harcourt Ring Road, which is a vital transportation artery in the region.

The road project, which was initially awarded to Nugi Nigeria Limited on April 12, 2017, was abandoned after some preliminary work was completed.

Since then, the road has deteriorated significantly, becoming impassable and causing major inconveniences for motorists and the local community.

The proposed reconstruction will not only address these issues but also contribute to the overall development of the state.

Engr. Atemea Briggs, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works, explained that the project will connect Okania through Ogbogoro to Ozuoba, providing a much-needed transportation link for the region.

The Council has approved a total sum of N6,734,865,277.88 kobo only for the road contract award, with a five-month construction period expected.

The project will be funded entirely from the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), demonstrating the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and efficient use of public funds.

In addition to the road project, the State Government has also begun efforts to clear the Nta-Wogba Creek to mitigate flooding in the Port Harcourt City center and will soon commence rehabilitation work on the failed sections of the Igwuruta-Chokocho Road.

These initiatives highlight the government’s dedication to improving the state’s infrastructure and addressing the needs of its citizens.

The Rivers State Executive Council’s approval of the N6.7 billion road project amidst a political crisis underscores the government’s commitment to progress and development.

By prioritizing critical infrastructure projects, the Council aims to improve the quality of life for residents and promote economic growth in the region.
