President Vladimir Putin stressed on Saturday that Russia and the United States share responsibility for maintaining global peace and security. His comments came in a congratulatory message to President Donald Trump marking 250 years since America's independence.
Putin noted that the Declaration of Independence signed in July 1776 marked a pivotal moment in world history. He recalled that Russia had backed the North American colonists in their fight for freedom from British control.
The Russian leader highlighted several defining chapters in Moscow-Washington relations. These included fighting together as allies during two world wars and defeating Nazi tyranny, he said.
Putin stressed that Russia and the United States, as the world's two largest nuclear powers, bear unique obligations in safeguarding international peace. He added that strengthening ties between Moscow and Washington would benefit both nations and the wider world.
The Russian president called for relations built on fairness, mutual gain, and genuine partnership between the two capitals. He said such cooperation serves the interests of ordinary Russians and Americans alike.
Across the Atlantic, King Charles III also sent congratulations to Trump on the American milestone. The monarch highlighted the bonds linking Britain and the United States across science, research, education, culture, arts, defence, security, trade and investment.
Charles noted these ties are "unique and far-reaching," shaped by centuries of shared trials and triumphs. He said the relationship rests on friendship, trust, and shared values including liberty, the rule of law, and human dignity.
The British king acknowledged that London and Washington bear joint responsibility to protect the world. He stressed that decisions taken today will shape prosperity and national security for future generations, according to his message.
