Peter Obi, the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, has called on eligible Nigerians to register as voters, saying the exercise forms the bedrock of good governance. He made the appeal on Friday after dropping in unannounced at voter registration centres at the Civic Centre in Nibo and Nrijiofor Primary School in Nri, both in Anambra State.
The former Anambra governor revealed the surprise visits on Facebook, noting he'd stopped by the centres while passing through the state for scheduled meetings. He said he was heartened by the number of Nigerians turning out to register.
"I was pleased to see Nigerians registering to vote," Obi said. "I took the opportunity to commend those who had turned out and to encourage every eligible citizen to do the same."
Obi stressed that the path to good governance doesn't start on election day but with voter registration itself. He urged citizens to see the exercise as both a duty and a personal investment in Nigeria's future.
"The journey to good governance does not begin on election day; it begins with voter registration," he stated. "Registering to vote is not just a civic responsibility—it is an investment in the Nigeria we all desire."
He appealed to those who haven't yet registered to do so before the deadline closes. Obi also called on already-registered voters to push family, friends, neighbours and colleagues to participate in the registration drive.
According to him, each registered voter strengthens Nigeria's democracy and moves the nation closer to its development goals. "Every registered voter strengthens our democracy and brings us one step closer to building the secure, united, productive and prosperous Nigeria we all seek," he added.
Obi closed his message with his familiar campaign phrase: "A New Nigeria is POssible."
