PDP’s Future at Stake: Damagum’s Retention Sparks Internal Conflict

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been grappling with a leadership crisis that threatens its future, particularly after the recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.
This meeting, attended by prominent party leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Vice President Namadi Sambo, sought to address the party’s internal issues, including the contentious position of the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.
Despite the presence of influential party figures, the meeting failed to resolve the underlying tension between factions led by Atiku and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The NEC’s decision to defer the issue of Damagum’s position until August has been perceived as a victory for the Wike camp, further fueling the internal conflict within the PDP.
Public Affairs Analyst and Communication Scholar, Nduka Odo, argues that the party’s current state of disarray is not due to the strength of any particular faction but rather a consequence of the PDP’s failure to address the needs and concerns of its strongholds.
He warns that if the PDP does not put its house in order and atone for its past actions, it risks losing relevance at the national level in future election cycles.
The recent emergency meeting of the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) also addressed the issue of the Caretaker Committee of River State.
The NWC recognized the efforts of various party organs, particularly the PDP Governors’ Forum, to find a political solution to the crisis.
However, the existence of an ex parte order issued by the Federal High Court, Abuja, restraining the NWC from taking further action on the matter complicates the situation.
In contrast, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, believes that the PDP’s failure to address its internal issues and the continued influence of Nyesom Wike within the party signal a bleak future for the PDP.
He suggests that the party must engage in soul-searching and introspection to address its problems rather than engaging in blame games and avoiding the root causes of its internal conflicts.
As the PDP navigates this tumultuous period, the party’s ability to unite its factions and address the concerns of its strongholds will be critical to its future success.
The decisions made by the NWC and NEC in the coming months will be crucial in determining whether the PDP can overcome its current challenges and regain its footing as a formidable opposition party in Nigeria.
