PDP Governors Set to Control Party Structures in Upcoming NEC Meeting

Ahead of the crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for April 18, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDPP) is witnessing a significant power struggle between the camps of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

In this unfolding political drama, PDP governors, who are the major financiers of the party, are reportedly preparing to seize control of the party’s structures.

As the PDP remains in opposition, the governors are seen as the collegiate leaders of the party, with a vested interest in maintaining control over the party structures in their respective states.

The PDP Governors’ Forum is set to hold a series of meetings to determine the fate of the party ahead of the NEC meeting.

According to a source close to the PDP Governors’ Forum, the governors believe that they deserve to control the party due to their significant contributions to its day-to-day running.

“What is Wike and Atiku contributing to the day-to-day running of the party?” questioned the source.

The governors’ determination to take control of the party’s structure is not only driven by their financial contributions but also by their personal political ambitions.

For instance, the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Governor Bala Mohammed, has presidential ambitions, and other governors concluding their second term in office also have other political interests.

This power struggle is further complicated by the suspension of the PDP National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, and the legal challenges surrounding his replacement.

Lawyers within the PDP have pointed out that no action can be taken on any matter pending in court, including appeals or Supreme Court cases.

Adding another layer of complexity, the Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed April 16 to hear a suit seeking to prevent former National Chairman Uche Secondus and former Rivers State Governor Celestine Omehia from attending the PDP’s NEC meeting.

As the PDP governors prepare for their meetings, the political landscape of the party is set to undergo significant changes.

The outcome of the NEC meeting and the decisions made by the PDP governors will undoubtedly shape the future of the party and its leadership.
