Private healthcare companies are pouring money into specialist medical services as Nigeria confronts rising chronic diseases, an increasingly ageing population and surging demand for quality care. OneHealth by AXA has become the latest provider to move in this direction, launching geriatric and optometry clinics at its Victoria Island Medical Centre in Lagos.

The expansion addresses a critical gap in Nigeria's healthcare system. Eye disorders and age-related illnesses continue to strain the country's ability to deliver adequate care across the board.

Wahen Egbe, chief business officer at OneHealth by AXA, said the new clinics respond directly to how Nigerians' healthcare needs are changing. "The addition of these clinics reflects the growing demand for specialised medical services that address the evolving health needs of people at different stages of life," she told reporters.

The geriatric clinic came about because of mounting concerns about older adults' healthcare needs. Nigeria is seeing more cases of chronic and age-related illnesses that demand attention.

Egbe explained the clinic handles comprehensive assessment, prevention, diagnosis and long-term management of conditions tied to ageing. Hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, cognitive decline and mobility disorders all fall within its scope.

Beyond treating illness, the clinic pushes healthy ageing. It helps senior citizens maintain functional independence and boost their quality of life through customised care plans.

The geriatric clinic opens every Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for specialist consultations with elderly patients and their families.

Dr. Jadesola Idowu, country manager at OneHealth by AXA, said the optometry clinic aims to improve access to preventive eye care.

Undiagnosed vision problems are becoming increasingly common.

Many eye conditions develop quietly without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss happens, Idowu noted. Regular eye examinations are essential for catching problems early.

"Our optometry clinic offers comprehensive eye examinations, vision screening, refraction services, prescription of corrective lenses, eye health assessments and early detection of common eye diseases affecting children, adults and older persons," she said.

The clinic also provides preventive eye care counselling and occupational vision assessments. It updates prescriptions and refers patients for advanced ophthalmic treatment when needed.

Operating hours run Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The optometry clinic sits within OneHealth's broader strategy to deliver integrated healthcare through multiple specialist services under one roof.

OneHealth by AXA, an AXA Group subsidiary, already offers specialist services in cardiology, endocrinology and obstetrics. The new clinics strengthen its portfolio further.
