Ondo PDP Mocks APC Guber Primary Election, Calls it a Mockery of Democracy

The Ondo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has recently criticized the conduct of the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship primary election, labeling it as a “huge charade and a mockery of democracy.”

The PDP’s state Publicity Secretary, Kennedy Peretei, issued a statement in Akure, expressing disappointment over the handling of the primary election, which took place on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

According to the statement, the APC’s inability to conduct a free, fair, transparent, and credible primary election for its 171,922 members is a clear indication of their inability to govern the state effectively.

The PDP also pointed out that the exercise was an anticlimax and a mockery of democracy in every sense of the word.

The statement further revealed that the National headquarters of the APC raked in a substantial sum of N830 million from the aspirants who took photos with their nomination forms in Abuja.

However, the party failed to ensure a smooth and transparent primary election, leaving many aspirants and party members in despair.

The PDP highlighted the lack of clarity on whether the primary would be conducted through a Direct or Indirect process, as well as the absence of election materials and officials in many of the centers.

In addition, there were reported cases of violence in Akure South and Okitipupa Local Government Areas, where political thugs had a field day.

The party’s statement emphasized the need for a credible process that would have brought only one of the sixteen aspirants to square up with other political parties in the general election.

However, the APC’s failure to do so has only served to affirm that the party should be consigned to the dustbin of history.

In contrast, the PDP is set to demonstrate its superior organizational sagacity and democratic credentials through a governorship primary election that will be covered live by media houses and Non-Governmental Organizations in the full glare of the world.

This event is scheduled to take place this week, and it is expected to be a stark contrast to the chaotic and disorganized primary election conducted by the APC.

The Ondo PDP’s criticism of the APC governorship primary election comes at a crucial time for both parties, as they prepare for the upcoming general elections.

The PDP’s strong stance on the need for a credible and transparent electoral process is likely to resonate with voters who are looking for a change in leadership in the state.

As the political landscape in Ondo State heats up, the PDP’s condemnation of the APC’s primary election serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding democratic values and principles in the electoral process.

The upcoming PDP governorship primary election will be closely watched as the party seeks to differentiate itself from the APC and showcase its commitment to free, fair, and credible elections.
