Okuama Residents Sue Nigerian Army for N200bn Over Alleged Rights Violations

Residents of the Okuama-Ewu community in Delta State have taken legal action against the Nigerian Army, seeking a staggering N200 billion in damages for alleged rights violations during a military operation.

The suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Warri, accuses the Nigerian Army of invading their community, destroying homes, displacing residents, and violating their fundamental human rights.

The plaintiffs, comprising 17 residents of the Okuama-Ewu community, have named the Nigerian Army as the respondent in the suit.

They are seeking redress for various violations, including the destruction of their homes and properties, loss of livelihood, and the psychological trauma caused by the military’s actions.

The residents argue that the Nigerian Army’s actions were a response to the murder of 17 soldiers in the community, an incident for which they claim no responsibility.

The plaintiffs have also alleged that the military operation was carried out without proper police investigation or any public inquiry, and that their fundamental rights to a fair hearing, dignity of human person, private and family life, freedom of movement, and choice of residency have been violated.

In addition to the demand for N200 billion in damages, the plaintiffs are seeking several reliefs from the court, including a declaration that the Nigerian Army’s actions were illegal, unlawful, and unconstitutional.

They also seek an order compelling the Nigerian Army to allow the residents to return to their homes and rebuild their community, as well as an order restraining the army from further violating their fundamental rights.

The lawsuit has sparked widespread attention and debate, with many observers closely watching the proceedings to see how the court will address the alleged rights violations.

The case is expected to be heard in the coming weeks, with the plaintiffs hoping for a swift resolution that will provide them with the justice and compensation they seek.
