Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Punch Newspaper correspondent, Mr. Matthew Ochei, describing it as a painful loss to the media community in Delta State and the nation at large.
Ochei, who was the Punch correspondent in Delta State and a native of Ukunzu in Aniocha North Local Government Area, reportedly died in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 43 years old.
In a condolence message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor commiserated with the Ochei family, journalists across the state, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, noting that the late journalist was a dedicated professional who carried out his duties with courage, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility.
Governor Oborevwori said Ochei’s unwavering commitment to truth, public enlightenment, and ethical journalism earned him respect within and beyond the media industry, adding that his death has created a noticeable void.
“This is indeed a critical and painful moment. Delta State has lost a committed and fearless voice who informed and educated the public with professionalism and integrity,” the governor said.
He described Ochei’s untimely passing as a heavy blow to his family, colleagues, and all who believe in responsible journalism.
The governor extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and professional colleagues of the deceased, praying that God grants them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones he left behind. May Almighty God grant them comfort at this difficult time and grant the soul of the departed eternal rest,” he added.
Governor Oborevwori further assured the NUJ and the entire media community of the solidarity and support of the Delta State Government as they mourn the late journalist.
