Obasanjo Urges FG to Tackle Unemployment and Promote Agribusiness for Improved Security and Food Sustainability

Nigeria’s former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has called on the Federal Government to address the issue of unemployment, stating that it is a significant factor contributing to the rise in insecurity in the country.

Speaking at the 9th International Trade Exhibition & Conference on Agrofood, Plastics, Printing, and Packaging, held in Lagos, he emphasized the importance of promoting agribusiness to improve security, food security, and nutrition security.

Obasanjo, who referred to himself as a “mad man for agriculture,” highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to food security, which includes food availability, affordability, and accessibility.

He stressed that agribusiness can contribute to employment, wealth creation, poverty elimination, and income generation, particularly through foreign exchange.

The former president also pointed out that the challenge of food waste after cultivation must be addressed, with nearly 40% of the country’s food going to waste.

He urged the government to focus on making food accessible to those who need it and to ensure that it reaches the areas where it is needed.

Olusegun Obasanjo’s call for the Federal Government to tackle unemployment and promote agribusiness underscores the interconnectedness of these issues with security, food sustainability, and economic growth in Nigeria.

By addressing these challenges, the country can work towards a more secure and prosperous future for all its citizens.
