NSCDC and NATCOM Join Forces to Combat Proliferation of Small Arms in Anambra State

In an effort to address the growing issue of illegal arms and the resulting upsurge in criminal activities in the country, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the National Commission for the Coordination and Control of the Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NATCOM) have agreed to collaborate in tackling the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Anambra State.

The partnership was announced by the NSCDC Commandant in Anambra, Olatunde Maku, during a courtesy visit from the NATCOM Commandant in the state, Dr Ebere Anozie. Maku acknowledged that illegal arms are a significant factor in the rise of criminal activities and emphasized the importance of working together to create a safe environment and promote peace in the country.

“Security is everyone’s business, and we are going to work with you to mop up all the illegal arms in the hands of wrong persons,” said Maku.

He also acknowledged that there might be infiltrators within the system who do not share the same vision and objectives, but stressed the importance of fulfilling the job at hand.

Anozie, on the other hand, highlighted the role of NATCOM in stopping illegal arms, ammunition, and chemical weapons from entering the country, in line with the Economic Community of West African States’ treaty that Nigeria has been a signatory to since 2006.

The collaboration between the NSCDC and NATCOM aims to leverage the expertise of the NSCDC in internal security to prevent and combat the proliferation of small arms, light weapons, and related materials in Nigeria.

The partnership represents a significant step forward in addressing the issue of illegal arms and reducing crime in the country.

The joint effort between these two organizations demonstrates the commitment of the Nigerian government to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.

It also highlights the importance of collaboration and cooperation between different agencies in tackling complex security challenges.

As the partnership between the NSCDC and NATCOM unfolds, it remains to be seen how effective their combined efforts will be in curbing the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Anambra State and the rest of Nigeria.

The outcome of this collaboration will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the country’s security landscape and could serve as a model for future initiatives aimed at addressing similar issues.
