Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka Advocates for Decentralization in Nigeria

In a lecture at The Punch’s 50th anniversary event, Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka emphasized the need for decentralization in Nigeria.

He argued that decentralizing governance would bring it closer to the people, allowing for more effective and efficient management of the country’s affairs.

Soyinka pointed out that the current system of centralization has led to the marginalization of certain regions, which has taken a toll on the nation’s unity.

He suggested that instead of talking about restructuring, it would be more beneficial to focus on terms like reconfiguration and decentralization, as they are easier to understand and implement.

The elder statesman also highlighted the importance of decentralization in maximizing development.

He noted that while the current government has recognized the necessity, importance, and inevitability of decentralization, it has not taken concrete steps to implement it.

Soyinka stressed that decentralization is essential in addressing issues such as food security, as it allows for more targeted and effective solutions.

He also called for an end to the cycle of violence and for leaders to prioritize the needs of the people.

The Nobel Laureate urged Nigerian leaders to stop taking citizens for a ride and to consider decentralization as a way to improve security and productivity.

He warned that if the nation continues to be governed in a centralized manner, it may lead to its informal disintegration.

Prof. Wole Soyinka’s advocacy for decentralization in Nigeria highlights the need for a more efficient and inclusive governance system.

By bringing governance closer to the people, decentralization can help address the challenges faced by the nation and foster greater unity and development.
