No Regrets: Arrested Yoruba Nation Agitators Stand by Their Actions

Two of the arrested Yoruba Nation agitators, Alabi Ogundeji and Ademola Adeniyi, have declared that they do not regret their actions in invading the Oyo State Governor’s Office and the state House of Assembly on Monday.

The duo, along with about 20 others, were arrested after a group of masked men in military camouflage with rifles and charms stormed the government buildings in an attempt to make a political statement.

Ogundeji, a 55-year-old lecturer at the Federal College of Education (Special) in Oyo State, and Adeniyi, a 29-year-old phone repairer, both expressed their support for the Yoruba Nation and their belief in the legality of their actions under Nigerian and international law.

They stated that their actions were part of a larger effort by the Yoruba Nation to assert their sovereignty and to seek independence from Nigeria.

Oodua Nation leaders have taken steps to pursue a referendum, which they argue serves as a legitimate means of expressing the will of the Yoruba people for self-determination.

The agitators believe that the Yoruba Nation is an indigenous nation with a right to stand on its own.

However, the state Police Commissioner, Hamzat Adebola, described the agitators’ actions as criminal, unpatriotic, and a clear case of treasonable felony and terrorism.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining Nigeria’s sovereignty and unity and urged parents, guardians, and leaders to discourage their children, wards, and followers from engaging in such activities.

As the debate over the future of the Yoruba Nation and Nigeria’s unity continues, the arrests of these agitators highlight the ongoing tensions and the differing views on the country’s political and cultural identity.

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria as it navigates its complex history and the aspirations of its diverse population.
