The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) is set to take the Final Investment Decision (FID) on the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP) Project in December 2024, according to the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Mr. Mele Kyari.
Kyari made the announcement during a leadership dialogue session at the ongoing CERAWeek Conference in Houston, United States.
He also advocated for a differentiated approach to attaining energy transition for the African continent, emphasizing that energy availability is closely linked to energy security.
While acknowledging the challenges posed by geopolitical events, Kyari stressed the importance of first attaining energy security in countries before transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
He highlighted the need to fill the supply gap in sub-Saharan Africa, where 70 percent of the population does not have access to clean cooking fuels.
Kyari also emphasized the role of gas in Nigeria’s energy transition, stating that the country must utilize its abundant gas resources to provide the alternative fuel it needs.
He mentioned ongoing engagement on the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project, which is currently at an advanced stage, with plans to create a pipeline that will pass through 13 African countries and all the way to Europe.
The GCEO also discussed the impact of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, which has reformed Nigeria’s oil and gas industry by ensuring that the NNPCL emerged as a fully commercial entity.
He also addressed the issue of crude oil theft, stating that Nigeria is fighting the menace frontally and that there has been some improvement in the restoration of the country’s crude oil production.
CERAWeek is an annual conference organized by S&P Global, which brings together participants from over 90 countries to discuss energy technologies and climate issues.
The 2024 conference is expected to feature 1,400 speakers and focus on new energy technologies and climate issues.
