Nigerian Authorities Monitor Progress of Train-7 Project in South Korea

Nigerian authorities from the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) are currently in South Korea to monitor the progress of the Train-7 project.

The visit, which took place from March 18 to 22, 2024, aimed to inspect facilities in the ongoing project awarded to the consortium of SAIPEM, Chiyoda, and DAEWOO (SCD JV).

The Train-7 project is a significant investment by the federal government to increase NLNG’s production capacity by 35 percent, from 22 Million Tons Per Annum (MTPA) to 30 MTPA.

This increase will enhance Nigeria’s position as a leading LNG exporter. The monitoring visit focused on assessing capabilities in out-of-country yards, planning for in-country capacity development, and ensuring strict compliance with commitments contained in the Nigerian Content Compliance Certificate.

During the project update meeting, the executive secretary of NCDMB expressed gratitude to the contractors for their resilience and the impressive quality of work completed so far.

He encouraged them to build more capacities in Nigeria, ensuring that future projects of this nature can leverage the capabilities developed in-country.

He also emphasized the continuous collaboration between the NCDMB and NLNG to ensure the project’s success while maximizing its positive impact on Nigeria’s economy and the global LNG industry.

According to recent updates, the Train-7 project has reached a 52 percent completion rate and employs 8,300 Nigerians with diverse skill sets.

The project has significant local content commitments, including 100 percent in-country fabrication of the condensate stabilization unit, pipe-racks, flare system, and non-cryogenic vessels.

It also provides opportunities for local procurement of goods and services and the development of new capacities and capabilities for the local supply chain.

The Train-7 project offers various spin-off opportunities, such as logistics, equipment leasing, insurance, hotels, office supplies, aviation, and haulage.

These opportunities will contribute to the growth of the Nigerian economy and strengthen the country’s position in the global LNG market.

As the monitoring visit progresses, the Nigerian authorities’ efforts to ensure the success of the Train-7 project demonstrate their commitment to promoting local content development and capacity building in the country’s energy sector.
