Niger State Governor Faces Backlash for Spraying Naira Notes at Citizens

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State has sparked outrage after a video surfaced of him throwing naira notes at his supporters from the roof of a moving vehicle.

The action has drawn criticism from civil society, opposition political parties, clerics, and citizens of the state, who have condemned it as unacceptable, wrong, dehumanizing, and in violation of the Nigerian Constitution and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.

Critics argue that Governor Bago’s actions go against the principles of governance and decorum.

They also highlight the potential harm caused by such actions, as several people have sustained injuries while scrambling for the naira notes.

The act of spraying money, they contend, is an abuse of the naira and a mockery of the economic difficulties faced by the people.

The backlash against Governor Bago has been significant, with many calling on him to stop the practice and focus on more productive ways to engage with and support the citizens of Niger State.

They stress the importance of treating people with dignity and respect, and urge the governor to use public funds in a more mature and responsible manner.

Civil society groups have expressed concern that Governor Bago’s actions could lead to the further spread of poverty and the creation of a culture of dependency among the people.

They argue that there are more effective and respectful ways to distribute financial aid and support to those in need.

As the criticism mounts, the governor’s office has yet to issue a response to the allegations.

It remains to be seen if Governor Bago will heed the calls for change and adopt a more responsible approach to governance and public engagement.
