Niger State Cracks Down on Illegal Mining: 30 Arrests and 229 Companies Under Scrutiny

Niger State authorities have arrested 30 individuals and are now assessing 229 mining companies for approval or disapproval.

Niger State Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Garba Sabo, made the announcement on April 15, 2024, in an effort to combat the illegal mining activities that have been plaguing the region.

During a press conference, Sabo revealed that the arrests were made during a visit to some illegal mining sites.

He expressed frustration over the challenges faced by the authorities in apprehending the culprits, as they often flee upon seeing the officers.

Despite the difficulties, Sabo emphasized that the ban on illegal mining remains in place, and the state is committed to ensuring that the practice is eradicated.

Sabo also highlighted the efforts of the ministry to introduce biometrics to gather detailed information on all miners in the state.

This measure aims to prevent the monopolization of the mining business by a few companies and to ensure that all mining activities are conducted within the bounds of the law.

The Commissioner for Mineral Resources urged the public to refrain from labeling the state’s efforts as incompetent, as they have been actively working to address the issue.

He mentioned that the ministry is frequently met with resistance and attacks while conducting operations at illegal mining sites, even when accompanied by security personnel.

The crackdown on illegal mining in Niger State comes at a time when the global demand for minerals and resources is on the rise.

As the state continues to evaluate the 229 mining companies for approval or disapproval, it remains committed to promoting responsible and legal mining practices.

Niger State is taking decisive action against illegal mining, with 30 arrests and the assessment of 229 companies.

The introduction of biometrics aims to provide greater transparency and accountability in the mining sector, ultimately protecting the state’s resources and ensuring that only legitimate companies are allowed to operate.
