New National ID Card to Be Issued by Banks, Says FG

The Federal Government recently launched an enhanced national identity card that aims to cater to citizens’ various needs.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that the new national identity card will be issued to applicants by their banks.

This development comes after the recent introduction of the enhanced national identity card, which features payment capabilities and social service features, developed in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS).

According to the NIMC, the new card will be issued through applicants’ respective banks, in line with existing protocols for issuing debit and credit cards.

The card will be powered by the AFRIGO card scheme, an indigenous scheme managed by the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS).

Applicants can request their cards by using their National Identification Number (NIN) through the NIMC’s self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks.

The card can be picked up by holders at designated centers or delivered to the applicants at an extra cost.

The enhanced national identity card aims to address the demand for physical identification, enabling cardholders to prove their identity and access government and private social services.

It is also expected to promote inclusion for disenfranchised Nigerians, empower citizens, and encourage increased participation in nation-building endeavors.

With the introduction of the new card, the Federal Government is taking a significant step towards enhancing the efficiency and convenience of national identification services for Nigerian citizens.
