LP Shifts National Convention Venue to Nnewi Over Disruption Concerns

The Labour Party (LP) has once again changed the venue for its national convention, now set to take place in Nnewi, Anambra State, on March 27, 2024.

The decision to relocate the event from Umuahia, Abia State, was made due to concerns of potential disruption, marking the second time the party has moved the convention’s location.

Initially scheduled to be held in Benin City, Edo State, on March 29, the LP first changed the venue to Umuahia before settling on Nnewi.

A letter addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, signed by the National Chairman and Secretary, Julius Abure and Umar Ibrahim, informed the commission of the new location.

A top LP official, speaking to Daily Trust on Sunday, cited the possibility of disruption by the “Obidients,” supporters of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as the primary reason for the change in venue.

The official also mentioned that the national chairman, Julius Abure, might face difficulty in securing another term in office if the convention were held in Abuja.

However, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, denied that the change was due to fears of disruption.

Instead, he emphasized the importance of holding the convention in Nnewi to honor Peter Obi.

The Labour Party’s decision to shift the national convention venue to Nnewi, Anambra State, demonstrates its commitment to ensuring a smooth event while recognizing the influence of the “Obidients” and honoring Peter Obi.
