In response to the recent data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showing a significant increase in the headline inflation rate to 31.70% in February 2024, the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has expressed grave concerns over the persistent rise in inflation.

The LCCI Director General, Dr. Chinyere Almona, emphasized that the inflationary surge poses a "Significant challenge to the economic wellbeing of Nigerians."

In light of this challenge, the LCCI has called on the federal government to harmonize its fiscal and monetary instruments to tackle the cost of agricultural production, enhance food processing, and sustain the fight against insecurity.

Dr. Almona stressed the importance of prioritizing smallholder farmers and vulnerable groups, including women and youth, for targeted assistance.

To address these issues, the LCCI has put forth several recommendations, including:

Strengthening collaboration between the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, state ministries of agriculture, agricultural extension services, research institutions, and farmer cooperatives.

Prioritizing smallholder farmers and vulnerable groups, such as women and youth, for targeted assistance.
Enhancing food processing to reduce post-harvest losses and improve food security.

Sustaining the fight against insecurity to ensure a stable and conducive environment for agricultural activities.

The LCCI believes that by implementing these measures, the government can effectively tackle the rising inflation and protect the economic wellbeing of Nigerian citizens.

The organization urges the federal government to act swiftly and decisively to address this pressing issue, as the current inflation rate poses a significant threat to the nation's economic stability.
