Lagos State Transport Policy Unveiled in May to Boost Economic Growth and Attract Investors

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that the Lagos State Transport Policy will be unveiled in May.
This policy aims to create a sustainable, efficient, and reliable transportation system that will not only attract investors but also encourage public-private partnerships.
The announcement was made at the Global Transport Policy Annual Transport Roundtable/Bilingual Magazine event, with the theme of “Transport Infrastructure and Strategic Policy Intervention: Building Blocks for Economic Growth.”
The policy is set to serve as the foundation for transport goals, objectives, and strategies for the government and the people of Lagos State.
It will also act as the basis for emerging regulations and legislations on transport and traffic development in the state.
The policy will address key issues such as integration of all modes of transportation, inclusion of people with disabilities in transport infrastructure, and the encouragement of private participation in infrastructure and service provision.
Furthermore, it will support the inclusion of non-motorised transport infrastructure in ongoing road projects.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented at the event by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, called for insightful discussions and exchange of ideas to foster economic growth and development.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration in creating a resilient, sustainable, and inclusive transport ecosystem that can unlock the full potential of transport infrastructure and strategic policy intervention for economic growth and prosperity.
Segun Obayendo, President of the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration (CIOTA), encouraged stakeholders in the sector to embrace professionalism.
He highlighted that professionalising the transport sector would contribute to the development of a new beacon and shape the future of the industry.
He also noted that Nigeria does not have a National Transport Policy and that professionalising the sector could help achieve this goal, with CIOTA offering their support.
Dr Oluwasegun Musa, Chairman/Chief Consultant of the Global Transport Policy, stressed the need for strategic policies designed to optimise transportation networks to ensure efficiency, sustainability, and inclusivity.
He pointed out that connectivity goes beyond geographical boundaries and integrates different regions into cohesive economic units.
By investing in last-mile connectivity, the benefits of economic growth can be shared by all segments of society.
Musa called for the establishment of a comprehensive, multimodal transport system that enhances connectivity within and beyond borders, stretching to neighbouring countries to amplify the benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The event also saw the unveiling of the Global Transport Policy magazine, a bilingual publication produced quarterly with authoritative trend-spotting and compelling cross-cutting analysis.
The magazine is expected to contribute to the ongoing discourse on transportation infrastructure and strategic policy intervention in Nigeria and beyond.
With the Lagos State Transport Policy set to be unveiled in May, the state is poised to make significant strides in creating a sustainable, efficient, and reliable transportation system that will attract investors and foster economic growth.
This policy, combined with the commitment to infrastructure development, is a crucial step towards achieving a more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive transport ecosystem in Nigeria.
