Labour Party and NLC Clash Over Party Leadership and Convention

A power struggle between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Labour Party (LP) has escalated, with the NLC picketing the party’s headquarters and secretariats nationwide.

The NLC insists that the LP’s national chairman, Julius Abure, should resign, citing concerns over the party’s leadership and the unilateral convocation of a national convention.

The NLC argues that the party was established to create a viable opposition and ensure good governance in Nigeria. However, they believe that Abure’s actions have undermined these goals.

The NLC Political Commission has accused Abure of excluding key stakeholders, such as workers, youths, and informal workers, from participating in the party’s decision-making processes.

The Labour Party, led by Julius Abure, has condemned the NLC’s actions, describing them as unlawful and criminal.

The party has accused the NLC of destroying party property during the raid on its headquarters.

The LP has also criticized NLC President Joe Ajaero for his alleged greed and inordinate ambition, questioning his ability to lead the organization effectively.

The Labour Party maintains that it is an independent political party and that its ownership is determined by its card-carrying and financial members, not the NLC.

The party has also pointed out that the constitution does not allow one organization to own another, further challenging the NLC’s claims of ownership.

The ongoing conflict between the Labour Party and the Nigeria Labour Congress highlights the challenges faced by the party in establishing itself as a viable opposition and ensuring good governance in Nigeria.

The NLC’s concerns about the party’s leadership and the exclusion of key stakeholders from decision-making processes have led to a messy battle for supremacy.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the Labour Party can resolve its internal issues and establish itself as a strong and inclusive political force in Nigeria.
