Kwara State Government Resolves Long-Standing Salary Arrears for Teachers and Local Government Workers

The Kwara State Government has announced that it has finally cleared all the salary arrears for State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) teachers and local government workers inherited from the administration of former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, the government has committed a substantial amount of N1,297,389,165.83 to clear the balance of the arrears owed to the SUBEB teachers.

Additionally, another N1,622,673,992.12 was apportioned to clear the balance of the arrears for the local government workers in the past administration, according to the data from the last allocation meeting of the local government.

Since 2020, the Kwara State Government has spent over N5.5 billion to offset the arrears of salary for SUBEB teachers, local government workers, and local government pensioners alone, apart from meeting its multi-billion naira monthly obligations to these categories of workers and many others since it was elected in 2019.

In a further display of commitment to its workforce, the government has approved cash-backing for the implementation of the 2022 promotion for teaching and non-teaching staff of the SUBEB.

This decision aims to boost the purchasing powers of workers at this time. Governor AbdulRazaq has consistently emphasized his dedication to fulfilling his campaign promise to clear all the salary and promotion arrears inherited from his predecessor.

With the final settlement of the SUBEB and local government salary arrears, the persistent agitation for payment dating back to 2016-2019 has finally come to an end.

This resolution marks a significant milestone in the state’s financial management and serves as a testament to the government’s commitment to prioritize the welfare of its workforce and ensure a stable and sustainable educational system in the state.
