Kwara Assembly Urges Gov. Abdulrazaq to Investigate Unstable Power Supply and Poor Metering System in the State

The Kwara House of Assembly has recently called on Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to direct the Ministry of Energy to investigate the recurring issues of erratic power supply and poor metering system in the state.

The decision was made after the adoption of a motion titled “Need to Address The Poor Services of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and Curb the Extortionist Tendencies of the Company’s Staff in Kwara State.”

This motion, sponsored by Alhaji Abdulganiyu Folabi-Salau (APC/Omupo), highlighted the Federal Government’s encouragement for Nigerians to adopt a prepaid metering system.

However, the IBEDC staff has been frustrating this effort by subjecting innocent customers to outrageous estimated billings that do not accurately reflect their electricity consumption.

In a debate over the issue, several lawmakers expressed their concerns about the poor power supply, exploitation of electricity consumers through the estimated billing systems, and the high cost of obtaining prepaid meters.

Speaker Yakubu Danladi-Salihu read out the House’s resolutions, which included the following:

The IBEDC management must ensure that good prepaid meters are provided for electricity consumers in Kwara, while the estimated billing system is stopped without further delay.

The House Committee on Energy is directed to interface with IBEDC in Kwara to curb the arbitrary billing system and all other connected matters for effective service delivery.

In another matter of public concern, the House has requested that the state government provide relief materials to the victims of a devastating rainstorm in the Rifum community in the Patigi Local Government Area.

The storm caused damage worth millions of Naira and displaced many residents.

The lawmakers also urged the state government to liaise with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to the affected individuals, helping to alleviate their suffering.

This news comes as the Federal Government continues to encourage Nigerians to adopt a prepaid metering system, directing various distribution companies to make it available.

As the Kwara Assembly takes steps to address the issues of unstable power supply and poor metering systems in the state, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to these concerns and improve the situation for its residents.
