Kano State Government Addresses Water Scarcity: N1.2 Billion Monthly Investment

Kano State has been grappling with a significant water scarcity issue, affecting a large portion of Kano metropolis and its environs.
In an effort to tackle this problem, the Kano State Government has been investing approximately N1.2 billion monthly to provide potable water to its residents.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Ali Makoda, disclosed this information during a recent media briefing, detailing the breakdown of the costs involved.
According to Makoda, the monthly expenditure includes N400 million for diesel, N387 million for chemicals, and N280 million for electricity bills, along with other additional costs.
The commissioner also highlighted the outdated equipment at the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant as a primary cause of the water shortage, alongside the high temperatures that increase water consumption.
Makoda criticized the previous administration for neglecting the water sector, claiming that only 20% of the state’s water demand was met during their tenure.
In contrast, the current administration has managed to supply more than 60% of the water needs of the people.
To address the long-term water supply challenges, the Kano State Government has partnered with the French government to invest 63.4 million Euros in constructing the third Kano Water Treatment Plant.
This significant investment is a testament to Governor Abba Yusuf’s commitment to ensuring that there is enough drinking water in Kano.
The Kano State Government’s substantial monthly expenditure on water supply reflects the administration’s dedication to addressing the pressing issue of water scarcity in Kano metropolis and its surrounding areas.
With the construction of the third water treatment plant underway, the state is taking a proactive approach to meet the growing water demand and improve the quality of life for its residents.
