Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has demanded action from Ghana's government after a local TV station aired her film without permission just 21 hours after its release. The star dropped "The Memory of You" on Friday at 5pm, only to discover NETV broadcasting it the following day without her consent, payment, or license.
On Saturday, Ojo took to Instagram to blast the station and call for intervention from President John Dramani Mahama and Ghana's National Film Authority. She urged them to revoke or suspend NETV's broadcasting license.
"My movie THE MEMORY OF YOU 1&2 is being aired on TV channels in Ghana without my permission," she wrote. "No call.
No license. No payment.
Just pure theft."
The actress stressed that filmmakers cannot allow broadcasters to build their channels on stolen content. She pointed out that Ghana has copyright laws already in place, specifically the Copyright Act of 2005.
"Enforce them," she demanded of the authorities. The National Film Authority had previously warned stations that broadcasting unauthorized content risked suspension or license revocation.
Ojo emphasised the real cost of piracy to the creative industry. "Piracy kills creativity, kills jobs, and kills investment," she wrote, explaining that filmmakers pour years, money, and dedication into their craft.
The actress made clear she wasn't asking for favours but demanding respect and legal protection for intellectual property. "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH," she concluded.
This incident comes just a week after Ghana's National Film Authority announced plans to clamp down on television stations airing Nigerian films without authorisation. The move signalled the regulator's intention to tackle widespread content theft across the region.
