Inmates Escape Suleja Prison as Heavy Rains Cause Devastation

119 inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger state, managed to escape during a devastating rainstorm that ravaged the facility on Wednesday night.
The heavy downpour, which lasted for hours, destroyed parts of the custodial center, including its perimeter fence, allowing the inmates to flee.
As of Thursday morning, the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has been able to recapture 10 of the escapees and is actively working with other security agencies to track down the remaining inmates.
The NCoS has assured the public that it is taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of the citizens and has urged them to report any suspicious activities or sightings of the escapees to the nearest security agency.
Spokesman for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the NCoS, Adamu Duza, stated that the Service is aware of the outdated infrastructure of many of its facilities, which were built during the colonial era.
He emphasized that efforts are being made to modernize the facilities, as evidenced by the ongoing construction of six 3000-capacity ultra-modern custodial centers in all the geo-political zones in Nigeria and the renovation of existing ones.
The incident at the Suleja Prison highlights the urgent need for infrastructure improvements in Nigeria’s correctional facilities.
The NCoS is determined to address the challenges posed by aging facilities and ensure the safety and security of both inmates and the public.
As the search for the remaining escapees continues, the NCoS has called on the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies in order to apprehend the fleeing inmates and maintain public safety.
