Governor Yusuf Launches Ambitious Tree Planting Initiative in Kano State

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has initiated a grand tree planting project aimed at combating climate change and improving the environment of the state.

The project, which was launched in collaboration with the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), a World Bank program, will see the planting of three million trees across the 44 local government areas of Kano.

At a ceremony held on Sunday, Governor Yusuf himself planted the first tree along the State Road by the Government House, marking the beginning of the ambitious project.

He emphasized the importance of replacing the trees that have been cut down over the years for personal consumption and encouraged residents to participate in the tree planting initiative.

The project is designed to address the negative effects of climate change and excessive heat in the state.

The largest share of the three million trees, approximately 1.5 million, will be distributed and planted across the major streets in the eight metropolitan local government areas.

Dr Dahir Hashim, the Kano ACReSAL Project Coordinator, highlighted that the project aims to plant and protect over 10 million trees before the end of Governor Yusuf’s first term.

He also mentioned that measures have been put in place to protect the trees, including a sensitisation policy to discourage tree felling for firewood.

This initiative demonstrates Governor Yusuf’s commitment to environmental protection and the well-being of Kano State’s residents.

It also serves as an example for other states and regions facing similar environmental challenges.
