Governor Bago Declares State of Emergency in Minna Over Thuggery: Shoot-at-Sight Order Issued

In response to the resurgence of violent activities by thugs in the state capital, Minna, Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has declared a state of emergency over insecurity.

The decision was announced during a Sallah Durba festival organized by former Governor Babangida Aliyu on his farm in Minna.

Governor Bago has directed security personnel to shoot at sight any thug found threatening the peace within the state.

This strong measure comes after the recent outbreak of violence, which led to the deaths of two individuals and several injuries on Friday night in Minna.

Expressing zero tolerance for insecurity and thuggery, Governor Bago emphasized the need for decisive action against both the perpetrators and those sponsoring them.

He also ordered the closure of sites associated with artisan miners, who are believed to be contributing to the menace in the state.

Minna Emirate had previously suspended its annual traditional Sallah Durba for seven years due to insecurity.

However, the recent violent activities have once again disrupted the festivities, forcing businesses to temporarily close and dampening the usual celebratory atmosphere.

Chanchaga Local Government Chairman Aminu Ladan confirmed that normalcy had been restored after the recent crisis, which he linked to the activities of miners.

He also expressed support for Governor Bago’s approach, stating that dealing with the problem decisively is the only way to ensure lasting peace and security in the state.

The shoot-at-sight order and the crackdown on artisan miners are part of Governor Bago’s efforts to address the security challenges facing Niger State.

It remains to be seen how effective these measures will be in curbing the resurgence of thuggery and violence in Minna and the broader state.
