Gov. Zulum Urges Nigerian Army to Establish Bases in Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad to Combat Terrorism

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has urged the Nigerian Army to establish military bases in strategic locations, including Sambisa Forest, the shores of Lake Chad, and Mandara Mountain.
During a recent visit by members of the House of Representatives Committee on Army, Zulum emphasized the importance of these bases in effectively ending the insurgency that has plagued the region for years.
The governor stressed the need for the National Assembly to ensure sufficient appropriations for weapons to tackle the security challenges facing the state.
He also highlighted the porous borders in Borno, which borders three countries, as a contributing factor to the movement of small arms fueling insecurity in the north.
Zulum reiterated his commitment to supporting the military in both its kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to tackling insurgency.
He revealed that so far, about 190,000 repentant Boko Haram members have surrendered to the authorities, presenting a new challenge in managing the large number of repentant members.
The governor emphasized the importance of achieving total peace to enable the over three million displaced persons to return to their ancestral homes.
He expressed concern over the sustainability of camps for the over one million displaced persons, citing issues such as prostitution and drug abuse.
The Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Abdullahi Mamudu, commended Zulum for his support to the Army and other security agencies and encouraged him to continue his efforts for further success.
This call for the establishment of military bases in key locations comes at a crucial time, as the Nigerian government and security forces strive to address the challenges posed by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups.
The move is expected to strengthen security measures and provide a more effective response to the ongoing insurgency in the region.
