Fuel Scarcity in Akwa Ibom Worsens Economic Woes: IPMAN Suspends Operations

The economic situation in Akwa Ibom, an oil-producing state in Nigeria, has taken a turn for the worse as fuel scarcity grips the region.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association (IPMAN) has decided to suspend operations, citing various issues including the activities of Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association (NOGASA) and the impounding of members’ products on the road, leading to extortion.

As a result of the strike, private filling stations in Uyo and other parts of the state have closed, causing long queues at government-owned stations and a spike in the price of petrol to N800 per liter.

The situation has led to an increase in local transportation costs, which, in turn, has caused food prices to skyrocket in the market.

In response to the crisis, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association Of Nigeria (PETROAN) has urged its members to continue their business operations, deploying enforcement teams to monitor retail outlets and report to the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.

Governor Umo Eno has also reacted to the situation, directing the Commissioner for Internal Security to liaise with security outfits to prevent any further disruptions at the state’s borders.

He has also reassured the public that the government is working to address the issue and prevent any group from causing additional hardship for the people of Akwa Ibom.

The fuel scarcity in Akwa Ibom has exacerbated the already challenging economic situation in Nigeria, highlighting the need for a comprehensive solution to the country’s energy crisis.

As the situation unfolds, the government, regulatory authorities, and stakeholders must work together to find a sustainable resolution that ensures a stable supply of fuel and fosters economic stability in the region.
