FRSC Proposes Jail Terms for Reckless Drivers to Curb Road Accidents

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has proposed that drivers who cause road accidents should face jail terms without the option of fines.
Corps Marshal Dauda Biu presented this proposal at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, emphasizing the need for stringent penalties to deter reckless driving and improve overall road safety.
The FRSC has urged all state governments to prosecute drivers responsible for road accidents, particularly in light of recent avoidable crashes in Oyo, Kano, and Kaduna states.
The Corps has already received a letter from the Kaduna State government expressing its commitment to prosecuting drivers involved in such incidents.
The FRSC hopes that other states will follow suit and direct their commissioners of justice or police to take action against drivers who violate road rules.
Biu believes that by jailing drivers without the option of fines, a strong message will be sent to other road users, encouraging them to drive responsibly and adhere to road safety regulations.
He stated, “In fact, we are advocating for a jail term without an option of fine so that by the time we have 50 jailed drivers, everyone will take caution, It is a collective effort.”
The FRSC is also working on intensifying collaboration with the judiciary across all 36 states to expedite the trial of drivers involved in road accidents.
This collaboration aims to ensure that offenders face legal consequences promptly, serving as a deterrent to others and promoting safer driving practices on the roads.
The proposed measures by the FRSC highlight the importance of addressing road safety as a matter of national concern.
By enforcing stricter penalties and fostering stronger collaboration between law enforcement, the judiciary, and state governments, Nigeria can work towards reducing the number of road accidents and creating safer roads for all.
