Former Governor Yahaya Bello Raises Alarm Over EFCC Siege at Residence

Former Governor Yahaya Bello Raises Alarm Over EFCC Siege at Residenceof Kogi State has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of attempting to arrest him, despite a court order restraining the anti-graft agency from doing so.

In a statement released on April 17, 2024, Bello expressed concern over the presence of stern-looking operatives of the EFCC laying siege to his residence in Abuja.

The operatives are reportedly investigating an N84 billion fraud case against Bello, which he claims is a politically motivated move to harass and embarrass him.

The former Governor argues that the EFCC is flouting a court order issued in February, which prohibits the agency from arresting or prosecuting him pending the outcome of a substantive suit filed on his fundamental rights.

Bello has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and ensure the EFCC respects the rule of law.

He described Nigeria as a country governed by law and criticized the EFCC for portraying the nation as lawless.

The former Governor’s statement comes as a response to the EFCC’s actions, which he believes are in direct violation of the court order.

The case has drawn significant attention, with many questioning the motives behind the EFCC’s actions.

The agency is currently appealing the court order and has filed a motion for a stay of execution, with a hearing scheduled for April 22, 2024.

Amidst the controversy, the newly-elected Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, paid a visit to Bello’s residence, accompanied by security operatives and supporters protesting against the siege.

Ododo arrived at Bello’s residence at about 2:30 pm on April 17, 2024, demonstrating solidarity with the former Governor.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the EFCC and the Nigerian government will address the allegations of flouting a court order and the broader implications for the rule of law in the country.
