Former Aviation Minister Sirika Arrested by EFCC Over Alleged ₦8bn Nigeria Air Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika in connection with an alleged money laundering scandal involving over ₦8 billion linked to the Nigerian Air project.

Sirika presented himself to the EFCC’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command on Tuesday, April 23, at approximately 1:00 p.m.

The former minister is currently being interrogated by EFCC investigators concerning purportedly fraudulent contracts he approved for a company named Engirios Nigeria Limited, which is owned by his brother, Abubakar Sirika.

The EFCC’s investigation into Sirika’s activities as the Aviation Minister has brought to light allegations of financial misconduct and corruption, particularly concerning the Nigeria Air project.

The project, which was intended to establish a national airline for Nigeria, has been marred by controversy and allegations of mismanagement and fraud.

Sirika, who served as the Minister of Aviation from 2015 to 2023, has been a central figure in the Nigerian aviation industry for many years.

His tenure was marked by several initiatives aimed at modernizing and improving the sector, including the Nigeria Air project.

The arrest of Sirika by the EFCC is a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the alleged embezzlement of funds connected to the Nigeria Air project.

As the interrogation continues, more details are expected to emerge regarding the extent of Sirika’s involvement in the alleged financial irregularities.

The case has once again brought attention to the issue of corruption in Nigeria’s public sector, highlighting the need for greater transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.

The outcome of the investigation will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for the aviation industry and the broader fight against corruption in Nigeria.
