FAAN Reopens Lagos Airport Runway After Dana Air Incident

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the reopening of the Murtala Mohammed Airport’s Runway 18L/36R in Lagos after a Dana Air plane incident on Tuesday.
The runway was temporarily closed to facilitate the evacuation and recovery of the aircraft and to ensure the removal of any Foreign Object Debris (FOD) that could pose a safety risk.
In a statement by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection at FAAN, it was revealed that the airport’s emergency response team promptly took action to evacuate and recover the aircraft from the site.
Following a comprehensive inspection of the runway surface by FAAN’s Operations Division and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), the runway was deemed safe for the resumption of operations.
An appropriate Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued to inform stakeholders of the reopening.
The Dana Air plane, with registration number 5N-BKI, overshot the runway during its landing sequence, causing the temporary closure.
FAAN expressed gratitude to the travelling public, airline partners, and stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during the closure and apologized for any inconvenience caused.
The authority remains committed to providing a safe, secure, and efficient air transport environment for all users of its airports.
As flight operations resume on Runway 18L/36R, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures and emergency preparedness in the aviation industry.
