Ex-Kaduna CAN Chairman Challenges Northern Elders’ Threat Over 2027 Election

John Joseph Hayab, the former Chairman of the Kaduna State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has challenged the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) over their recent statements about the 2027 election.

The NEF had expressed regret over supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2023 election and hinted at the possibility of not voting for him in the next election.

In a statement on Friday, Hayab criticized the NEF for their early threat regarding the 2027 election.

He argued that the focus should be on collaborating with the government to find solutions to pressing issues such as insecurity, hunger, and economic development, rather than making provocative statements that could further divide the country.

The NEF spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, had previously stated that the North made a mistake in voting for Tinubu and would be more cautious in selecting a candidate in the future.

He emphasized the need for a more inclusive, less controversial leader who would prioritize the interests of all Nigerian regions.

Hayab, however, pointed out that the current administration has already shown signs of progress, citing the improvement of the Naira against the Dollar and the swift recovery of the Kuriga school children in Kaduna State as examples.

He urged the NEF to support and challenge the government to work towards a better Nigeria, rather than making divisive statements.

The former CAN chairman’s comments come at a time when the country is grappling with various challenges, including insecurity and economic instability.

His call for unity and collaboration between groups like the NEF and the government could help foster a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.

As the 2027 election approaches, it remains to be seen how the NEF and other stakeholders will respond to Hayab’s challenge and whether the country will prioritize unity and progress over regional interests and divisions.
