Electricity Workers Threaten Strike Over ‘Unfeasible’ Tariff Hike: ‘Band A’ Rate Not Possible

Electricity workers in Nigeria have threatened to withdraw their services if the Nigerian Government fails to rescind the recently approved electricity tariff hike.

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has called the tariff increase ‘absurd’, stating that the government should withdraw it.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had raised the electricity tariff for ‘Band A’ customers, who are supposed to receive 20 hours of power supply daily.

However, NUEE insists that the 20-hour power supply is not feasible, and the tariff increase should be withdrawn.

In a statement, NUEE’s acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, warned the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, that if the government does not take action on the withdrawal of the tariff, the union will take decisive action.

The recent hike in electricity tariff from N68/kWh to N225/kWh has been met with criticism from NUEE, which believes the increase is detrimental to Nigeria’s economic diversification, growth, and well-being.

The union argues that the hike is not beneficial to Nigerians and should be withdrawn.

In response to the situation, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has assured the public that the government is working to improve the power supply in Nigeria.

He appealed to the labour union to understand the reasons behind the tariff increase and to work together towards a solution.

Adelabu emphasized that the government’s actions are aimed at solving problems in the power sector and ultimately benefiting the nation.

He urged the labour union to bear with the government and understand that the tariff hike would help to galvanize the economy and create jobs.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the Nigerian Government will address the concerns of the electricity workers and find a resolution that satisfies all parties involved.
