Bwala Calls for EFCC Reform Amid Yahaya Bello’s Case

Daniel Bwala, a former spokesperson for the now-defunct Atiku-Okowa Presidential Campaign Council, has voiced his belief that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is in need of reform.
This comes in the wake of the anti-corruption agency’s declaration of seeking former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, on 19 charges related to alleged money laundering, breach of trust, and misuse of funds amounting to ₦80.2 billion
During an interview on Arise Television, Bwala expressed his views on the matter, stating that the recent actions of the EFCC, particularly the announcement of seeking Bello, were unwarranted.
He also pointed out the inconsistencies in the agency’s approach to similar cases, citing the example of the suspended Humanitarian Minister, who has not been arrested despite preliminary indictments.
Bwala criticized the EFCC’s approach, suggesting that the agency should focus on reforming its principles and treating all individuals equally under the law.
He highlighted the disproportionate application of the agency’s principles, noting that the EFCC had offered Bello a chance to come to its office through the back door for an interview, a privilege not granted to others.
In addition, Bwala questioned the public declaration of seeking Bello, arguing that the agency has the means to apprehend him without such announcements.
He emphasized the need for a consistent approach in the handling of cases, urging the EFCC to focus on the system rather than on personalities.
The call for reform within the EFCC comes at a time when the agency’s chairman, Ola Olukoyede, has pledged to pursue Bello’s prosecution to its conclusion and assured that those impeding the former governor’s arrest would face legal consequences.
Bwala’s remarks underscore the need for a more consistent and principled approach within the EFCC in its efforts to combat corruption and ensure justice is served.
