Brigadier Gen. Diya Condemns Soldiers’ Actions Against Civilians with Dreadlocks

Aimed at addressing the concerns of media practitioners and social media influencers, Brigadier Gen. Olusola Diya, the Bridge Commander in charge of 14 Brigade Ohafia, has strongly condemned the actions of soldiers who have been torturing civilians over the issue of dreadlocks.
The seminar, held in Aba, Abia State, brought to light the ongoing problem of military personnel engaging in unprofessional conduct at checkpoints.
Brigadier Gen. Diya clarified that there is no law in Nigeria prohibiting people from having dreadlocks, and any soldier found engaging in such harassment will face severe consequences.
He emphasized that internet fraudsters are often associated with dreadlock hairstyles, but it is an infringement of citizens’ rights for military personnel to target innocent people based on their appearance.
The Brigade Commander reiterated the importance of respecting the rights of civilians and maintaining professionalism within the military.
He called on members of the public to report any soldier or military personnel engaging in the torture of civilians for having dreadlocks, and to provide the name and checkpoint location of the offending individual.
This issue highlights the broader problem of military checkpoints and the potential for abuse of power by those charged with maintaining security.
Brigadier Gen. Diya’s stance serves as a reminder that military personnel must adhere to the rule of law and respect the rights of civilians, regardless of their appearance or personal choices.
The Nigerian military has faced criticism in the past for its handling of security situations and the treatment of civilians.
This recent development underscores the need for continued efforts to improve the relationship between the military and the civilian population, and to ensure that the rights of all citizens are respected and protected.
